1. That depends on how you plan to use it and in what environment? Are you talking about a single person or in an enterprise environment?
2. It depends what you mean. (See link below which gives a great overview) The most commonly used software is Microsoft Project. On the surface, it is easy to use. If you dig into it really deeply, it gets very complicated. A plus is that it can be used across many different groups/industries and you print reports and graphs from it. It can also integrate into other office/ERP systems.
