What is issue tracking software?

Could someone please explain what What is Issue Tracking Software is, how it is used, advantages and the functions it preforms. thank you

1. Also known as bug tracking software, it is used to report, track and manage issues, errors, change requests reported. It provides an automated system for overall management, as opposed to using a spreadsheet or word document. Typically an issue raised with go through a life cycle or process - reported, under investigation, being fixed, fixed being verified, reopened, verified/closed. It allows a team to understand all the issues and track individual ones. Based on where the issue is in the process it will be assigned to someone for managing in the current state. For example, being fixed is assigned to a developer who fixes the problem and then changes it to fixed being verified and assigning it to a tester. The team can get a report (summary) of all bugs in current state to know the current state of the release. A lot of issues which are not closed can mean the software is not ready for release.
